I have seen some pretty neat wallpapers for vista, especially the one with the different colored curved lines. Even if you don’t care for windows products you can still use this technique to make a cool wallpaper for any system. The wallpaper I am about to show you isn’t supposed to look like the actual vista wallpaper, just similar in style.
Here are the other versions I made for my screen size and the 1024X768 with and
without the logo:

You can start out with a canvas whatever size you want, to fit your screen. I am going to use a 1024X768 canvas, because if I make one the size of my screen (1680X1060) than the screenshots for this tutorial will be pretty big.
On my screen I am going to zoom out to by hitting ctrl minus sign key combination to go to 66.7% so I have a lot of space to work on.
Just make your background black and start a new layer.
Grab your pen tool:
With it chosen click somewhere underneath the middle of your canvas and then click above your canvas and while holding down your mouse drag it to the left, making the line curved:
Now connect the rest of the line to make it sort of rounded:
Now right click in the middle of your shape, click make selection and hit ok:
Now you should have a oddly shaped selection made. Now I am going to grab my Gradient Tool and set it on linear gradient with transparency. Also change your color to white in your gradient options:
Now drag your mouse from left to right, with a little angle like this:
When you let go you should have something like this:
